Let’s talk about continuity...

If you want to get ahead in business, you can’t rest on your laurels or stick your head in the sand.

I get it, it’s tough being an entrepreneur (as well as being heart stoppingly rewarding!). I learnt a long time ago that my ‘To Do’ list would never be finished - and when I made my peace with that, life got a whole lot easier.

However, the art of continuity took me a bit longer to learn.

As @iamcarriegreen says, ‘success isn’t an accident’ you have to work at it.

To me, ‘working at it’ means creating something, marketing it really well, celebrating the success, reviewing what didn’t work - improving and then going again. You can’t rest on your laurels...

You can’t stick your head in the sand either...

As the leader, the entrepreneur, you need to get yourself up and out of the detail.

At the same time as getting what you’ve already created out there, marketing and delivering - you must create time for some innovation.

The Oxford Language dictionary defines the word innovate as:-
‘make changes in something established, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products.’

That means you need to be looking at what’s going on in your marketplace ie where’s it going, what your customers are going to want in the future (rather than now). You need to be looking at what’s happening in marketplaces around you.

That means you need to be making time to think, to not be immersed in the detail. You need the time to let your thoughts wander and for your mind to make connections.

Every now and again, you need to get your head out of the sands of detail and into the blue skies of tomorrow.

For you and your business, continuity is essential, that means your business needs marketing and innovation, it needs you to be thinking about today and tomorrow...

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows…

There’s an everyday mundanity to being an entrepreneur that people don’t tend to tell you about.

There’s an annoyingly frustrating, always happens at the wrong time, inevitableness to the way issues steam in and ruin your day.

You can usually spot the entrepreneur at a family event, they’re the one in the corner, whispering into their phone and making helpless hand gestures at their family and friends.

Business takes no prisoners, especially in the early days, it’s relentless, unforgiving and has brought me to angry and sad tears at times.

It’s also given me some of the best times in my life and there’s nothing like landing that deal, finishing that order or just simply solving that problem.

What it takes in tiredness on some days, it pays back in euphoria on others, but you’ve got to ride the lows to get the chance to appreciate the highs.

The ones who make it, are the people who keep at it, who take the pound of the waves and then seek the sunlight on the horizon.

Last year, we asked inspirational entrepreneur Tom Joule of @joules what one quality he thought had made the difference in getting him to where he is today and his one word answer was ‘tenacity’.

The ability to continue, the ability to carry on regardless.

But you have to remember that you’re in control, the time thieves are really naughty and if you let them, they’ll drive you into working 24 hours, into believing that you have to respond at all hours of the day or night.

You don’t…

When something happens that you have to deal with, once you’ve dealt with it, look at what caused it and what to do to stop it happening again. Remove future frustrations now.

Plus I’ll let you into another secret, the time thieves will also give back the time they stole to solve that unexpected, badly timed issue.

The return of it is totally within your power…you can declare a family picnic Saturday, duvet day Sunday or a bath night Monday. Turn the phones and emails off and enjoy the repayment of the hours that were previously stolen.

Tenacity & balance, sunshine & rain, it’s absolutely yours to control.

Over the years, I’ve been asked this question so

Over the years, I’ve been asked this question so many times...

“What advice would you give to a fellow entrepreneur?”

My answer is always the same...

“Do your research, decide where you’re going and then focus all in on getting there”

Starting a business is tough, growing a business is tougher and growing a business that is actually profitable takes tenacity and grit.

Generally, things don’t fall in your lap - so once you actually start seeing some results, it’s a huge relief, you give yourself a big pat on the back and then most entrepreneurs will start looking to work on the next new idea.

But they shouldn’t!!

Doing that is like climbing a mountain and not bothering to take in the view!

What they should be doing is doubling down on what’s working and finding more customers to buy it.

So, before you move onto the new stuff, make sure that you or someone in your team works on harvesting the rewards from the legwork you’ve already put in...

Vision followed by focus is the secret to success...

You can’t always see around the corner... But,

You can’t always see around the corner...

But, if you have a clear idea of where you’re heading (a vision) and spend some time checking out the lay of the land ahead of you, you’ll be best prepared for wherever you’re going.

Over the years, I’ve learnt that success comes from simplicity.

You have to decide where you want to go, plan how to get there and then be absolutely obsessive about it.

Measure every single thing you do against the yardstick of “is this moving me further towards my vision?” and if it’s not - you shouldn’t be doing it.

Don’t get me wrong - if we went round the corner in the photo and there was a big hole in our path that we could fall into, we’d take stock and decide what to do.

Sometimes we have to change the end goal because of new information - but that then should become our new yardstick to measure against.

But if no-one is scouting out the path ahead, we’re likely to walk around the corner, head down, eyes on our screen, and bam! We’re in that hole before you can blink.

This is why taking time out of your business to get a really clear vision of where you’re going is so key to your success. Done right, it informs everything you do.
